Follow Up Boss (FUB): How to control Email of the Week + Deal of the Week using Tags + Smart Lists

Set up your Automations to easily target contacts in FUB

If you use Follow Up Boss, the cleanest way to control who receives Better Email Automations (Email of the Week / Deal of the Week) is:

Tags in FUB → Smart Lists in FUB → select that Smart List as your audience in Better Email.

This keeps your audiences evergreen—when you add or remove a tag in FUB, your Better Email audience updates automatically.

Watch: FUB setup walkthrough

The simple setup (recommended)

Step 1: Create tags in Follow Up Boss

Create one tag for each recurring send you want to control:

  • Email of the Week (example tag: Email of the Week or EOTW)

  • Deal of the Week (example tag: Deal of the Week)

Why tags?

Tags can apply across stages, agents, and segments—so they’re flexible and consistent.

Bonus: If someone replies “take me off,” you can remove the tag (instead of forcing an unsubscribe) so they stop getting that send but can still receive other emails.

Step 2: Create a Smart List powered by that tag

In FUB, create a Smart List where the only criteria is:

  • Tag equals Email of the Week (or your chosen tag)

Do the same for Deal of the Week.

Now you have Smart Lists you can easily select as audiences in Better Email.

Advanced: Segment Deal of the Week by market / price point

If you serve multiple areas or have teams who specialize, create segmented DOTW tags like:

  • Deal of the Week – Alpharetta – 500+

  • Deal of the Week – Luxury

  • Deal of the Week – Investors

Then create Smart Lists for each tag.

Result: you can run different Deal of the Week Automations by segment without messy list management.

How to quickly add people to these Smart Lists (mass tag)

  1. In FUB, go to All People

  2. Clear filters, then filter down to the group you want (examples):

    • “Has a good email”

    • Last email activity older than X days

    • Any segmentation you prefer (no calls, no texts, etc.)

  3. Select contacts (use Select all if more than one page)

  4. Use Mass Actions → Apply Tag

  5. Apply the appropriate tag (EOTW / DOTW / DOTW segment)

Those contacts will now appear in the matching Smart List and therefore in Better Email when you select that Smart List as the audience.

In Better Email: choose the Smart List as your audience

When setting up an Automation or Broadcast, select your FUB Smart List (powered by tags) as the audience. Hit activate and you're all set!!
